Melissa Heywood specializes exclusively in the field of trade-mark law providing advice to clients in the development of trade-marks, the registration of trade-marks, the proper use and display of trade-marks, monitoring the marketplace for possible infringement and the enforcement of trade-mark rights. Melissa handles national and international trade-mark portfolios by attending to trade-mark registration in Canada and the United States, by coordinating trade-mark registration with our network of law firms around the world and by preparing informational documents which meet the specific needs of each client, be it a sole proprietor, a partnership, a corporation, an institution, a society or an association.
Melissa also represents clients in trade-mark opposition proceedings, cancellation proceedings and settlement negotiations. Further, she is regularly asked to collaborate with lawyers with respect to the adoption of corporate and business names, the adoption of domain names, trade-mark litigation, the transfer and licensing of trade-marks, corporate/franchising matters which involve trade-mark issues, legal research and investigations.
Melissa has worked in field of law since 1996. Prior to becoming registered as a Trade-mark Agent with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office and being recognized to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office in 2005, she assisted a well known downtown law firm for several years in the drafting of intellectual property agreements (including technology transfer and licensing agreements), franchise agreements and corporate/commercial transaction documents.
Having a background with practical exposure in a number of areas of law prior to becoming a Trade-mark Agent has proven invaluable. Melissa has a keen passion for communication and for organization which strengths contribute to the extra care and time spent on each client matter.
